Introduction To Cloud Backup
This is one of a collection of posts I’ve written recently to provide a high-level introduction to all of the products and services available within a Rackspace Cloud Account. I like to think of them as the building blocks of the Internet. Each post will give a description of the product, how to use it, the costs and the most frequently asked questions about that product.
I’ve also included several videos to help show how to configure and deploy and use all of these products.
As always, feedback is welcome and appreciated!
What is it?
Even though the cloud is engineered to prevent data loss, maintaining recent backups of your important data is still considered a fundamental best practice. Cloud Backup is a file-based backup solution that uses compression, encryption and de-duplication to ensure your data is protected and recoverable.
Cloud Backup should not be confused with the ability to image your servers, which is a strategy for horizontal scalability and not recommended for backup. See this article to learn more about making images of your Cloud Servers.
How do I use it?
Before you can use Cloud Backup, you must have the backup agent installed and running on your Cloud Server. Cloud Servers with a managed service level will have this additional piece of software installed by default as part of the build process. However, Cloud Servers on an infrastructure only account must have this agent installed manually by following these instructions.
Here’s a video showing how to install the agent on a CentOS 6.4 Cloud Server.
